Riders on the Storm

This soundscape recording was made April 27, 2017  six years after the terrible tornados in Alabama. The  April 27, 2011 storms resulting in 200 deaths Alabama, more in the rest of the country on that deadly day 317 died.

I was driving to Tuscaloosa, AL, when reports started being reported on the radio, we pulled off interstate 20/59 at Bessemer, AL exit and stopped at Bob Sykes Bar-B-Q Restaurant. As I went in I was struck by the silence out side, all traffic had stopped and no sound of any birds. Inside,  at first we stood around watching the TV and looking out the panoramic windows.

As the reports continued that the tornado was still on the ground and headed straight towards us, The Manager started moving us all back into the office, I was frozen in place, I saw that monster’s wall cloud passing just North of us. One mile wide and traveling at highway speed.

The next day I found out a manager that I had worked for and his wife, had died at their home in Oneonta Alabama. And the Full Moon Bar-B-Q that we were going to in Tuscaloosa, AL was destroyed,

Feeling Blessed is not enough, remembering the day and all the stories, It has changed my attitude about storm preparedness and now sleep with a weather radio nearby, you should too!
